The Night I Saw the Milky Way

The night you knocked on my door,

I saw the Milky Way.

I raised my body from the hard wood floor

And we lay on the ground still warm from the hot sun

A broad scattering of shining stars,

Sprinkled like sugar on a vast coal plane

We lay there,

Motionless and silent.

Our eyes open like stars on Earth,

Breathe rises from our lips

And we whisper stories of the past.

The bird with the largest eyes sings first,

She sees the day star and wakes from her dreamtime

She breaks the silence of the night with beauty in her voice.

A song of warmth and sunshine.
